The Pearson Language Tests, a unit of Pearson PLC group conducts two tests to judge the English proficiency of non native users who are aspiring for a career abroad. The name of the two entrance exam conducted by Pearson is Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) and Pearson Test of English General (PTE General). The two exams - PTE General and PTE Academic are very distinct from each other. a) Exam format In the PTE Academic exam format, there are four sections (exactly like IELTS exam) - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. In the PTE General exam, there are two segments, further divided into six sections altogether. The PTE General test has primary two sections - a written paper and a spoken test. The written segments is further divided into listening, reading comprehension and writing skills sections. b) Validity of score The PTE Academic exam result is valid only for two years from the date of issue of PTE Academic result. The PTE General test result never expires and it does not have any validity limitation. One who takes up the PTE General test once is lifetime, can use the same at any future use. c) Exam timing The PTE General exam is held thrice in a year in the months of May, December and June. The PTE Academic exam is held in more than 200 location and over 360 days in a year. During the three-hour test session, there are three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (completed together), listening, and reading. There is also an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. IELTS and PTE have similar test sections of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. … But in PTE, there is no live conversation and candidate has to speak to a microphone for getting recorded in a computerized system.
The range for the overall score is 10-90 points. Scores for communicative skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) are based on all test items that assess these skills, either as a single skill or together with other skills. The range for each communicative skill score is 10-90 points.
PTE Academic has been used to prove English proficiency for student visas in Australia for the past five years. However, the Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP) now accepts PTE Academic for temporary graduate, skilled, work and holiday, and former resident visa programmes as well.
PTE Academic scores are valid for up to two years from the date of the exam. Once the two-year period expires, the PTE 2018 score is automatically removed from the site and no longer be visible. Typically, PTE Academic 2018 Results are declared within five business days.


The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language proficiency test for study, work and migration. With more than 3 million test takers each year, it's recognised by more than 10,000 organisations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations and governments, in 140 countries around the world.
IELTS covers all four skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) and you get a ‘band score’ for each from 9 (expert) to 1 (non-user). Reading and Listening: For each test you answer 40 questions. Each questions counts equally. Your marks are converted into a band score. e.g. 18/40 in the reading or listening test will result in a 5.5 score in that skill. Speaking: You get an overall score based on an average of your fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Writing: You get an overall score based on on the average of your task achievement (answering the question), coherence and cohesion (organisation), vocabulary and grammar. There are two tasks and task 2 counts twice as much as task 1.
For both the General Training and Academic modules, the length of the IELTS exam is the same. The four sections include: – Listening (4 sections- 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time) – Reading (3 sections- 60 minutes) – Writing (2 tasks-60 minutes) – Speaking (3 sections- 15 minutes)
